Hey, Clairemont Democrats… it’s campaign kickoff time!

Fellow club member, and our party’s endorsed candidate, Carol Kim, is kicking-off her campaign this Saturday for the open District 6 seat on the San Diego City Council.

Special guests include our State Senator Marty Block, City Councilmembers David Alvarez and Marti Emerald, and San Diego Unified School Boardmember Richard Barrera.

We are starting early, at 5:30PM – Tues, Jan. 14th, 2014 at Boomerang’s, so you can get your food & drink orders in and meet our candidate who will be with us at 6PM. Carolyn Senger, MD

Our October meeting will feature the speaker Carolyn Senger MD.   Dr. Senger is a physician at UCSD Medical Center who is an expert on the details of the Affordable Care Act.  She will be speaking about some of the benefits of the ACA which are not commonly known.   Come and learn the advantages of this new healthcare law.

Dr. Carolyn Senger is a cancer researcher and preventive medicine physician at UCSD. She received her undergraduate education from the University of Michigan and her medical degree from Johns Hopkins. She joined Doctors for America’s “Patients over Politics” Bus Tour and soon afterward accepted the California State Director position. As state director, she coordinates local and state efforts of over 2300 members. Caring for patients with preventable health conditions and calamities fuels her passion for health advocacy and policy. She is inspired every day by the amazing members of the health care community (including patients) who strive to improve our health care system and envision a day when affordable, fair, high quality health care is accessible to everyone.

Gloria JohnsonThis week San Diego Democrats mourn the passing of Gloria Johnson (1937-2013), who was known for four decades as one of California’s most forceful activists for feminist and lesbian issues and Democratic politics.

Gloria became the first openly LGBT person to serve on the San Diego County Democratic Central Committee in 1976; she was named a Lifetime Member this year. She was a longtime board member and past president of San Diego Democrats for Equality (previously known as the San Diego Democratic Club).

In 1978 Gloria served as the San Diego Co-Chair of the committee to defeat the Briggs Initiative (Proposition 6), which would have banned gays and lesbians from teaching in California public schools.

Gloria was a longtime member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and served as Co-President of the San Diego County Chapter and Vice President for Political Action for California NOW. Before her retirement in…

Come to our July 9, 2013 Monthly Meeting and Learn More about Nuclear Safety in California

Please join the Clairemont Democrats on Tuesday July 9, at Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers in Clairemont for our monthly club meeting.  Come at 6:00 p.m. to dine and socialize with club members.  Our program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

This month, we are featuring Rochelle Becker, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility.  Rochelle Becker has been actively promoting nuclear safety in California for 30 years.  She will be speaking about San Onofre, its closure, and getting recompense for rate payers, as well as other items of interest regarding nuclear developments.

Here is some additional background on Rochelle Becker: As the past Mothers for Peace spokesperson and project director, Rochelle testified before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the California Energy Commission the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the state legislature and Congress. Currently Rochelle is representing the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility and Sierra Club before the CPUC addressing issues of license renewal and other ratepayer costs in PG&E 2007 General Rate Case. Rochelle was instrumental in gaining the support of California’s Attorney General and the County of San Luis Obispo for a federal appeal filed in December 2003 addressing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s refusal to allow hearings on post 9/11/01 security before licensing an expanded high-level radioactive waste facility on California’s vulnerable earthquake active coast.  Rochelle has also worked with organizations on safety issues at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). She is currently working with California Earthcorps in legal proceedings to address the safety concerns of replacing steam generators at the Southern California nuclear plant before the CPUC. Rochelle has recently been appointed to the Sierra Club’s newly formed Radiation Committee.  Rochelle has won several environmental awards and for several years was the President of the Board of the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo. Rochelle Becker graduated from the University of San Francisco. She lives with her husband of 39 years in Grover Beach.
