Assemblymember Todd Gloria features in a new video released today by Assembly Democrats, issuing an open letter vowing to keep the California dream alive.
As a reminder, there is no club meeting this month since it falls on Election Day!
Instead, we will be gathering with the San Diego County Democratic Party in Downtown San Diego at the Westin Gaslamp Horton Plaza at 910 Broadway Circle, San Diego, CA 92101. The party starts at 8:15pm, so keep working to elect our Democratic candidates until that time!
Finally, there will be no club meeting in December. We will be celebrating the holidays with fellow Democratic clubs at a joint Holiday Party on Sunday, December 11 in the afternoon, so mark your calendars accordingly! More details to follow post-election!
If you are an absentee ballot voter, be sure to mail back your ballot early, or drop it off at the county Registrar of Voters office (5600 Overland Ave, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92123).
The earlier you vote, the earlier you will be taken off the contact lists of campaigns — this means less phone calls and canvassers to deal with as the election gets closer!
For more election information about the June Presidential Primary, check out the Registrar of Voters website: sdvote.com.
This Sunday (May 1st), we are encouraging you attend the Hillary Clinton caucus to help support club president Dr. Jen Campbell and town council president Ryan Trabuco. They’re running to become delegates to the DNC and would love to have your support. Also running are longtime Democratic activist Judy Ki, and Farouk Al-Nasser who is Vice President of the Poway Democratic Club. Caucus elections start at 2:00pm at UA Local 230, 6313 Nancy Ridge Drive, San Diego, CA 92121. As long as you’re in line by 3:00pm you will be allowed to vote.
For our Tuesday, May 10 meeting, we are excited to welcome Col. Doug Applegate and Patrick Malloy, candidates for Congress in the 49th and 50th congressional districts. They’re running against Tea Party incumbents Darrell Issa and Duncan Hunter, Jr.
At our Tuesday, June 14 meeting, we will welcome Farouk Al-Nasser as our guest speaker. Farouk is an expert on ISIS and the geo-politics of the Middle East.
Club meetings start at 7:00pm, and the address for Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers is 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, 92117. If you’d like to join as a member, we now have online memberships!
Please come early to socialize and order food and drinks. The owners of Boomerang’s have been so gracious to our club in providing meeting space. Let’s be sure to return the favor and support their business!

Our Congressman, Scott Peters — who our club has proudly endorsed for re-election to Congress, by the way — has long been a champion for women’s health.
At the start of the current 114th Congress in fact, Rep. Scott Peters proudly stood against the Tea Party’s attempt to undermine women’s health choices. Scott Peters has done so time, and time again. We applaud him for it. One of the many reasons we love having Scott as our representative in Congress.
However, on a state-by-state basis over the last 5 years, Tea Party extremists have contributed to new laws being passed that have directly contributed to the closing of at least 70 women’s choice clinics throughout the country. On average, 14 per year. Closed. Done. Jobs lost, and healthcare opportunities for women abandoned.
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver seems to be on a roll lately. Voting laws were given the spotlight last week, which we posted about here. On his program last night, John threw the spotlight on the status of women’s health laws throughout the country.
Pretty scary stuff. The more Tea Party and anti-choice types get elected throughout the country, the more our progress on this issue recedes at the detriment to women.
Please, share this video. Perhaps, make a donation to Planned Parenthood. Then, let’s do something about it!
In California, we have it pretty lucky when it comes to voting.
We can change and update our voter registration online. We can easily apply for (and send in) an absentee ballot roughly a month before and through Election Day. Thanks to laws in California and a handful of other states, you practically have no excuse for not voting.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about our friends, families, and other eligible-to-vote Americans in states like Texas, Wisconsin, and South Carolina — actually, both Carolinas — so add North Carolina as well, among others.
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver takes a comical look — yet, eye-opening — at some of the more Draconian, anti-voting laws throughout the country.
For our February 9 meeting, we are excited to welcome Patrick Malloy, candidate for Congress against Tea Party extremist Duncan Hunter, Jr.
At our March 8 meeting, we will welcome Lee Burdick, Esq. as our guest speaker. Lee has penned a book titled Bob Filner’s Monster, detailing her time as an assistant to our disgraced, former mayor. She will be signing copies of her book, which we hope to have a few copies of that night.
Club meetings start at 7pm, and the address for Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers is 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, 92117.
Please come early to socialize and order food and drinks. The owners of Boomerang’s have been so gracious to our club in providing meeting space. Let’s be sure to return the favor and support their business!

Secretary Clinton and Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins join our fellow endorsed candidates: Scott Peters and Todd Gloria
Although we were unable to come to a consensus to endorse in the race for San Diego City Attorney, we decided to rate both Gil Cabrera and Rafael Castellanos as “acceptable” for Clairemont Democrats this election. No matter which candidate prevails in that race, we know both of these candidates would be stellar choices.
Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR
Hey, Clairemont Democrats!
For our November 10 meeting, our guest speaker will be Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR (Consumer Advocates for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly- RCFE). Chris worked with Speaker Toni Atkins to pass a bill be sure these facilities meet high standards of service and care to the elderly and won the 2014 Free Speech and Open Government Award in California. We either have family members, friends or ourselves who will be needing these facilities.
Club meeting will start at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117), however feel free to stop by earlier for food, drink, and conversation with your fellow Clairemont Democrats.
Club Endorsement Information
Our Democratic Club has been asked by many candidates for endorsements for their 2016 races. As you know, last summer we endorsed two outstanding people who are not opposed by any Dem candidates: Scott Peters, our incumbent Congressman for the 52nd Congressional District, and Todd Gloria, candidate for the CA 78th Assembly District.
According to our bylaws, only members in good standing are allowed to vote. The definition of members in good standing is that they have their dues paid up to date. Our dues are collected each January for the year. Our voting on endorsements in contested races will occur at our January meeting. Our club must have a 70% majority to endorse a candidate in a Democratic contested race. We also have the option of voting not to endorse any candidate for a particular race.
Why are we doing this at the January 12, 2016, meeting? Because the California Democratic Party has decided that the Democratic Party’s district delegates will be voting on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, on the endorsements for the state and local races. We would like our delegates from our Clairemont Democratic Club to know the wishes of their fellow club members.
Our club does not hold a December meeting due to the busy lives of our members preparing for the holidays.
If you wish to renew your membership for our Jan. 12th meeting, please send the following amount in a check to the address below or bring it with you in cash or check to the meeting Nov. 10 or Jan 12:
Member: $20/year Full Time Student/ Unemployed/ Veteran: $10/year
Make check payable to and send to:
Clairemont Dem Club
PO Box 178846
San Diego, CA 92117
Club members who have been named delegates include: Howard Wayne, Susan Guinn, Jen Campbell, Rhoda Quate, Ryan Trabuco, Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, and Eden Yaege.
Suzie Ditmars and Mike Thomason, longtime local Democratic activists and supporters, have been devastated by a condo fire that has left them with almost nothing.
Please consider donating what you can. Anything helps. Never pleasant to see unfortunate things happen to incredible people like Suzie and Mike.
If you have any questions, please contact Hannah Stern at the San Diego County Democratic Party office at hannah@sddemocrats.org.
From the GoFundMe page:
Mike Thomason and Suzie Ditmar have been two of the most stalwart parts of Democrats for Equality, and the Democratic family in general. They’re always there, offering a helping hand and making sure we get the job done.
It’s time to offer a helping hand to get the job done for them now.
You may have heard that Suzie and Mike suffered the complete lost of their home to a fire over the weekend. They are busy trying to put their life back together so they have not been able to provide us with a list of their current needs but we know they are safe and alright.
While we don’t know their specific needs, we know that most of those needs (clothes, temporary housing, etc.) can be helped with money so, we’re asking you to help out with a donation to this appeal.
Please donate to help Mike and Suzie out right now and send out this appeal to other Democratic Party family members for whom they have worked so hard over the years.
