On Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February14, we will gather starting at 6PM for our social hour and our meeting begins at 7PM. Feel free to bring your Valentine!
Our Speaker will be James McCord of the CA Clean Elections Campaign. You can find information about AB14 that is making its way through the CA Legislature that they are asking our Club to endorse.
We will hear about this and other actions this group is undertaking.
If you have not yet paid your $20 dues for 2017, please do so on our membership page, or by the upcoming meeting by cash, check or credit card, or mail your check to: Clairemont Democratic Club, PO Box 178846, San Diego, CA, 92117. If you have need for financial forgiveness on these dues, please let us know!
After the Feb. 14 meeting, you will be removed from our email list if we do not have your dues.
If you are an absentee ballot voter, be sure to mail back your ballot early, or drop it off at the county Registrar of Voters office (5600 Overland Ave, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92123).
The earlier you vote, the earlier you will be taken off the contact lists of campaigns — this means less phone calls and canvassers to deal with as the election gets closer!
For more election information about the June Presidential Primary, check out the Registrar of Voters website: sdvote.com.
For our February 9 meeting, we are excited to welcome Patrick Malloy, candidate for Congress against Tea Party extremist Duncan Hunter, Jr.
At our March 8 meeting, we will welcome Lee Burdick, Esq. as our guest speaker. Lee has penned a book titled Bob Filner’s Monster, detailing her time as an assistant to our disgraced, former mayor. She will be signing copies of her book, which we hope to have a few copies of that night.
Club meetings start at 7pm, and the address for Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers is 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, 92117.
Please come early to socialize and order food and drinks. The owners of Boomerang’s have been so gracious to our club in providing meeting space. Let’s be sure to return the favor and support their business!
Become a neighborhood supporter of Clairemont Democratic Club on Nextdoor! We are also on Facebook and Twitter @ClairemontDems, so like us and follow us there, too!
Secretary Clinton and Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins join our fellow endorsed candidates: Scott Peters and Todd Gloria
Although we were unable to come to a consensus to endorse in the race for San Diego City Attorney, we decided to rate both Gil Cabrera and Rafael Castellanos as “acceptable” for Clairemont Democrats this election. No matter which candidate prevails in that race, we know both of these candidates would be stellar choices.
President Obama’s final State of the Union address will be the same night as our meeting on Tuesday, January 12.
The speech begins at 6PM our time, so we will gather at 5:30 to order food, drink and chat, then listen to the speech together. It will likely be done by 7PM, our regular meeting time. Meeting as always is held at Boomerangs Gourmet Burgers (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117)
Come early to pay your cash or check dues for 2016 in person, OR mail your check NOW to Clairemont Dem Club, PO Box 178846, San Diego, CA 92117.
Executive Board met in December and decided that the Club endorsement votes should be in regard to races for office that would include the voters of Clairemont. Thus, the following races are those in which we will be voting. As per our by-laws, there will be three possible ways to vote:
We can vote to officially endorse a candidate — that requires 70% threshold,
We can vote not to endorse at all, or
We can vote that all or some of the candidates are “acceptable”
Below is the list of candidates and offices on which we will be considering endorsement:
City Attorney: Gil Cabrera, Rafael Castellanos, Mara Elliott
State Senate: Toni Atkins, Marty Block
U.S. Senate: Kamala Harris, Loretta Sanchez
U.S. President: Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders
City Councilman Todd Gloria – Club Endorsed for 78th State Assembly District
As you may recall, our club as already issued early endorsements for Congressman Scott Peters, and Todd Gloria for 78th State Assembly District.
Club Officer Elections
We will also be voting on our Club officers for 2016. We have four elected officers who are running unopposed at this time although nominations from the floor can be made:
President – Jen Campbell, MD
Vice President – Rhoda Quate
Secretary – Kyle Ellis
Treasruer – Linda Carston
Other Members of the Executive Board are appointed and serve as Committee Chairs of Membership, Internet Technology, Hospitality, Political Action, & Photography. Other possible Committees may be formed from time to time as the need arises.
At our Executive Board Meeting in December, the Board noted that changes need to be made to our Club’s By-Laws to reflect changes in County Party By-Laws that were made at the Central Committee meeting in November 2015. Other updates are also needed.
Looking forward to receiving your membership dues in the mail and seeing you at the upcoming meeting.
For our February 10 meeting, we are honored to welcome our friend and former Interim Mayor and President of City Council, Todd Gloria.
Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible as the owners of Boomerang’s will have to start charging the club for the use of the space if we don’t spend at least $150 while there. They are good Democrats and a Clairemont business and deserve our support.
Also, David Axelrod has written a memoir, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics, which hits book stores on February 10 (the date of our next meeting!). If you wish to pre-order, please do so.
Reminder: If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, then don’t forget to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks.
If you’re a registered Democrat, you may participate in the 2015 Assembly District Election Meetings (ADEMs) that are being held in many State Assembly Districts throughout California. These meetings are where you elect those delegates — 7 women, and 7 men — to represent us at the upcoming 2015 State Democratic Convention in Anaheim.
For more thorough information, please check out the video below from the California Democratic Party.
Since Clairemont is located in both the 77th and 78th Assembly Districts, both ADEM Elections are being held tomorrow (Saturday), January 10.
For those club members and fellow Democrats who live in the 78th State Assembly District (represented by our Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins), there are four (4) of our club members running and they would appreciate your vote! Club members include: Curtis and Martha Page, Susan Guinn, and Rhoda Quate.
Some candidates are running on slates, some are not. You do not have to vote for a slate. You can vote for whomever you wish, but we hope you will include these four club members if you vote in AD 78. For more AD 78 candidates and statements, please check out the CA Democratic Party’s website here.
Here is the meeting location and information for the 78th Assembly District elections:
For those club members and fellow Democrats who live in the 77th State Assembly District, there is only one slate being put forward by a host of different Democratic clubs, and it has also been endorsed by club members Carol Kim and Ryan Trabuco. For more AD 77 candidates and statements, please check out the CA Democratic Party’s website here.
As a reminder, you do not have to vote for a slate. You can vote for whomever you wish. Below is the meeting location and information for the 77th Assembly District elections:
If you have any further questions, please contact Dr. Jen Campbell at 858.455.0024. Now get out and vote, Democrats!
