Club Meeting: March 8

9745445_GHello, Clairemont Democrats!

We are looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming Tuesday, March 8th meeting at Boomerang’s. Our program will be a talk by Lee Burdick, former advisor to Bob Filner about her new book, Bob Filner’s Monster. She will have hardback copies available to purchase at $22.50 or you can order on Amazon for a paperback version for $16.95. She will be autographing the books for you at the end of her talk.

Our brief business that evening will include voting on the further additions to our club’s by-laws.

Also, we will consider endorsing for School Board in our District A. There are a few Democratic candidates: The incumbent, Dr. John Lee Evans, Daniel Smiechowski from Clairemont Planning Board, and Steph Groce from Clairemont Town Council. Dr. Evans will be at the School Board meeting that night and can not join us, but may be able to send a representative. The other candidates, Daniel Smiechowski and Steph Groce, will be present to give two minute introductions, take a few questions, and then give a 30-second summation before discussion and a vote is taken.

We will also hear from Melinda Vasquez — the Democratic candidate for State Assembly District 77, where many of our members live, who is seeking our endorsement. She is running against incumbent Republican Brian Maienschein.

If you have yet to pay your dues for 2016, please bring cash or check with you to our next gathering. Otherwise, we will no longer have you on our email list. You may also mail your dues to Clairemont Democratic Club, PO Box 178846, San Diego, CA, 92117. Dues are $20 for the calendar year. If you have need for financial forgiveness on these dues, please let us know!

February & March Meeting Information

IMG_2492Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our February 9 meeting, we are excited to welcome Patrick Malloy, candidate for Congress against Tea Party extremist Duncan Hunter, Jr.

At our March 8 meeting, we will welcome Lee Burdick, Esq. as our guest speaker. Lee has penned a book titled Bob Filner’s Monster, detailing her time as an assistant to our disgraced, former mayor. She will be signing copies of her book, which we hope to have a few copies of that night.

Club meetings start at 7pm, and the address for Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers is 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, 92117.

Please come early to socialize and order food and drinks. The owners of Boomerang’s have been so gracious to our club in providing meeting space. Let’s be sure to return the favor and support their business!

AB 1461: The California New Motor Voter Act

7 Million Voters. That’s more than the state populations of Washington, Massachusetts, and Arizona (individually, of course).

That is also the estimated number of new registered voters that The California New Motor Voter Act (AB 1461) will create if signed into law.

AB 1461 was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez and CA Secretary of State Alex Padilla. According to their press release, California ranks 38th out of the 50 U.S. states in terms of voter registration.

The bill is modeled after Oregon’s newly implemented New Motor Voter law that “allows for data already collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles to be provided by the Secretary of State to verify a resident’s eligibility to vote. After determining a resident to be eligible to vote, the Secretary of State then provides the information to county Registrars of Voters who maintain each county’s voter rolls. Those residents who are eligible to vote would be contacted by the Secretary of State with the option of declining registration or adopting a political party affiliation. The bill would continue to protect those covered by existing confidentiality policies, and voters would retain their right to cancel their voter registration at any time.”

For more information about AB 1461, check out Assemblywoman Gonzalez’s website, or contact Evan McLaughlin at (916) 319-2080 or (619) 850-2790.

MoveOn Petition: 3 U.S. Senators must Resign from the Armed Forces Active Reserves NOW

moveon-petitions-logo

At last night’s San Diego County Democratic Central Committee meeting, Steve Jesionka, a Marine veteran and member of the Central Committee, presented the petition that he has developed on MoveOn.org calling for three U.S. Senators who signed the letter to the leaders of Iran.  All three are members of the Reserves and are prohibited by the Military Code of Justice from criticizing the President or bringing discredit upon the U.S. or armed forces.

Steve created a petition to Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa and the United States Senate which says: “ALL members of the United States (US) armed forces, regular or RESERVE, are prohibited from criticizing the president or bringing discredit upon the US or armed forces.”  You can read the full text of the petition on MoveOn.org.

Will you sign PLEASE this petition and share it with others.  Post it on Facebook, Tweet it, etc. Click here: http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/3-us-senators-must-resign?source=c.em .cp&r_by=498118

For more information, you can e-mail Steve Jesionka.

Next Club Meeting: March 10

carol kravetzHey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our March 10 meeting, we are honored to welcome Carol Kravetz from Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Action. Carol is a retired film and television production coordinator whose IMDb page is filled with credits including TV’s Breaking Bad, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Malcolm in the Middle.

Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible as the owners of Boomerang’s will have to start charging the club for the use of the space if we don’t spend at least $150 while there. They are good Democrats and a Clairemont business and deserve our support.

Also as a reminder, David Axelrod has written a memoir, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics, which is available in book stores. It’s a great read!

On social media, our Clairemont Democratic Club is now on Nextdoor! Become a neighborhood supporter! We are also on Facebook and Twitter @ClairemontDems, so like us and follow us on there, too!

Reminder: If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, then don’t forget to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks.
