Instead, we will be gathering with the San Diego County Democratic Party in Downtown San Diego at the Westin Gaslamp Horton Plaza at 910 Broadway Circle, San Diego, CA 92101. The party starts at 8:15pm, so keep working to elect our Democratic candidates until that time!
Finally, there will be no club meeting in December. We will be celebrating the holidays with fellow Democratic clubs at a joint Holiday Party on Sunday, December 11 in the afternoon, so mark your calendars accordingly! More details to follow post-election!
We are looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming Tuesday, July 12thmeeting at Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers, 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, CA 92117.

As always, if you would like to join as a club member, dues are $20 and can be paid on our membership page. Otherwise, you may bring cash or check with you to our next gathering. You may also mail your dues to Clairemont Democratic Club, PO Box 178846, San Diego, CA, 92117. If you have need for financial forgiveness on these dues, please let us know!
If you are an absentee ballot voter, be sure to mail back your ballot early, or drop it off at the county Registrar of Voters office (5600 Overland Ave, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92123).
The earlier you vote, the earlier you will be taken off the contact lists of campaigns — this means less phone calls and canvassers to deal with as the election gets closer!
For more election information about the June Presidential Primary, check out the Registrar of Voters website: sdvote.com.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming Tuesday, March 8thmeeting at Boomerang’s. Our program will be a talk by Lee Burdick, former advisor to Bob Filner about her new book, Bob Filner’s Monster. She will have hardback copies available to purchase at $22.50 or you can order on Amazon for a paperback version for $16.95. She will be autographing the books for you at the end of her talk.
Our brief business that evening will include voting on the further additions to our club’s by-laws.
Also, we will consider endorsing for School Board in our District A. There are a few Democratic candidates: The incumbent, Dr. John Lee Evans, Daniel Smiechowski from Clairemont Planning Board, and Steph Groce from Clairemont Town Council. Dr. Evans will be at the School Board meeting that night and can not join us, but may be able to send a representative. The other candidates, Daniel Smiechowski and Steph Groce, will be present to give two minute introductions, take a few questions, and then give a 30-second summation before discussion and a vote is taken.
We will also hear from Melinda Vasquez — the Democratic candidate for State Assembly District 77, where many of our members live, who is seeking our endorsement. She is running against incumbent Republican Brian Maienschein.
If you have yet to pay your dues for 2016, please bring cash or check with you to our next gathering. Otherwise, we will no longer have you on our email list. Our Congressman, Scott Peters — who our club has proudly endorsed for re-election to Congress, by the way — has long been a champion for women’s health.
At the start of the current 114th Congress in fact, Rep. Scott Peters proudly stood against the Tea Party’s attempt to undermine women’s health choices. Scott Peters has done so time, and time again. We applaud him for it. One of the many reasons we love having Scott as our representative in Congress.
However, on a state-by-state basis over the last 5 years, Tea Party extremists have contributed to new laws being passed that have directly contributed to the closing of at least 70 women’s choice clinics throughout the country. On average, 14 per year. Closed. Done. Jobs lost, and healthcare opportunities for women abandoned.
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver seems to be on a roll lately. Voting laws were given the spotlight last week, which we posted about here. On his program last night, John threw the spotlight on the status of women’s health laws throughout the country.
Pretty scary stuff. The more Tea Party and anti-choice types get elected throughout the country, the more our progress on this issue recedes at the detriment to women.
Please, share this video. Perhaps, make a donation to Planned Parenthood. Then, let’s do something about it!
For our February 9 meeting, we are excited to welcome Patrick Malloy, candidate for Congress against Tea Party extremist Duncan Hunter, Jr.
At our March 8 meeting, we will welcome Lee Burdick, Esq. as our guest speaker. Lee has penned a book titled Bob Filner’s Monster, detailing her time as an assistant to our disgraced, former mayor. She will be signing copies of her book, which we hope to have a few copies of that night.
Club meetings start at 7pm, and the address for Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers is 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, 92117.
Please come early to socialize and order food and drinks. The owners of Boomerang’s have been so gracious to our club in providing meeting space. Let’s be sure to return the favor and support their business!

President Obama’s final State of the Union address will be the same night as our meeting on Tuesday, January 12.
The speech begins at 6PM our time, so we will gather at 5:30 to order food, drink and chat, then listen to the speech together. It will likely be done by 7PM, our regular meeting time. Meeting as always is held at Boomerangs Gourmet Burgers (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117)
Come early to pay your cash or check dues for 2016 in person, OR mail your check NOW to Clairemont Dem Club, PO Box 178846, San Diego, CA 92117.
Executive Board met in December and decided that the Club endorsement votes should be in regard to races for office that would include the voters of Clairemont. Thus, the following races are those in which we will be voting. As per our by-laws, there will be three possible ways to vote:
We can vote to officially endorse a candidate — that requires 70% threshold,
We can vote not to endorse at all, or
We can vote that all or some of the candidates are “acceptable”
Below is the list of candidates and offices on which we will be considering endorsement:
City Attorney: Gil Cabrera, Rafael Castellanos, Mara Elliott
State Senate: Toni Atkins, Marty Block
U.S. Senate: Kamala Harris, Loretta Sanchez
U.S. President: Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders
City Councilman Todd Gloria – Club Endorsed for 78th State Assembly District
As you may recall, our club as already issued early endorsements for Congressman Scott Peters, and Todd Gloria for 78th State Assembly District.
Club Officer Elections
We will also be voting on our Club officers for 2016. We have four elected officers who are running unopposed at this time although nominations from the floor can be made:
President – Jen Campbell, MD
Vice President – Rhoda Quate
Secretary – Kyle Ellis
Treasruer – Linda Carston
Other Members of the Executive Board are appointed and serve as Committee Chairs of Membership, Internet Technology, Hospitality, Political Action, & Photography. Other possible Committees may be formed from time to time as the need arises.
At our Executive Board Meeting in December, the Board noted that changes need to be made to our Club’s By-Laws to reflect changes in County Party By-Laws that were made at the Central Committee meeting in November 2015. Other updates are also needed.
Looking forward to receiving your membership dues in the mail and seeing you at the upcoming meeting.
At our August 11 meeting, the club unanimously endorsed Todd Gloria and Scott Peters for their upcoming elections in 2016.
Councilmember Todd Gloria is running for State Assembly
Todd Gloria is a Clairemont native who is running for State Assembly in the 78th Assembly District to replace termed-out Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins. Todd’s exemplary record as a member of the San Diego City Council and as interim Mayor, coupled with his stellar passion for infrastructure, affordable housing, and homelessness will serve him well as an advocate for our city, region, and California.
Congressman Scott Peters is running for re-election in 2016
Congressman Scott Peters has fought for our district, but has had several close elections against Tea Party extermists — beating Brian Bilbray in 2012, and winning re-election against Carl DeMaio in 2014. His professionalism, exemplary congressional staff, and winning record on the environment, women’s health, and veterans issues have proven formidable in the swing 52nd Congressional District. Scott is America’s Finest Congressman, and we’re proud to support his re-election!
