NBC Drops Trump

nbcuniversal

As reported by news media outlets today, NBCUniversal has announced that they are no longer doing business with republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. From the press release:

At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.

Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC.

In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in “The Apprentice” on NBC.

“Celebrity Apprentice” is licensed from Mark Burnett’s United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue.

Last month at our Clairemont Democratic Club meeting, we had a healthy discussion on the topic of supporting businesses that exemplify democratic values. Kudos to NBCUniversal for standing up for those values we believe in.

On that note, here is a page from The Gaily Grind on which of those commercial brands celebrated the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision on marriage equality.

Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our June 9 meeting, we are excited to welcome a presentation on human trafficking by our friend and club member Sarah Boot.

As a follow up from last month’s meeting, here is a link to the city’s Climate Action Plan.

Also, as a friendly reminder: Due to recent Bylaw changes, it’s important that we continue to grow and sign-up new members of the club. According to the endorsement process for the state party, the club gets 1 vote for every 20 members we have in each Assembly District (geographically, Clairemont is split between the 77th and the 78th districts). We need to increase our membership by the end of this month!

If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, then please remember to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks.

Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible. The owners of Boomerang’s are great Democrats, and they deserve our business and support.

AB 1461: The California New Motor Voter Act

7 Million Voters. That’s more than the state populations of Washington, Massachusetts, and Arizona (individually, of course).

That is also the estimated number of new registered voters that The California New Motor Voter Act (AB 1461) will create if signed into law.

AB 1461 was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez and CA Secretary of State Alex Padilla. According to their press release, California ranks 38th out of the 50 U.S. states in terms of voter registration.

The bill is modeled after Oregon’s newly implemented New Motor Voter law that “allows for data already collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles to be provided by the Secretary of State to verify a resident’s eligibility to vote. After determining a resident to be eligible to vote, the Secretary of State then provides the information to county Registrars of Voters who maintain each county’s voter rolls. Those residents who are eligible to vote would be contacted by the Secretary of State with the option of declining registration or adopting a political party affiliation. The bill would continue to protect those covered by existing confidentiality policies, and voters would retain their right to cancel their voter registration at any time.”

For more information about AB 1461, check out Assemblywoman Gonzalez’s website, or contact Evan McLaughlin at (916) 319-2080 or (619) 850-2790.

moveon-petitions-logo

At last night’s San Diego County Democratic Central Committee meeting, Steve Jesionka, a Marine veteran and member of the Central Committee, presented the petition that he has developed on MoveOn.org calling for three U.S. Senators who signed the letter to the leaders of Iran.  All three are members of the Reserves and are prohibited by the Military Code of Justice from criticizing the President or bringing discredit upon the U.S. or armed forces.

Steve created a petition to Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa and the United States Senate which says: “ALL members of the United States (US) armed forces, regular or RESERVE, are prohibited from criticizing the president or bringing discredit upon the US or armed forces.”  You can read the full text of the petition on MoveOn.org.

Will you sign PLEASE this petition and share it with others.  Post it on Facebook, Tweet it, etc. Click here: http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/3-us-senators-must-resign?source=c.em .cp&r_by=498118
