Hello, Clairemont Democrats!
Join us for our next club meeting next Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00pm inside Elijah’s Restaurant (7061 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego 92111).
As noticed at our last meeting, we will be considering a couple more 2020 endorsements, which include:
- San Diego City Attorney
- County Board of Education, District 1
- San Diego Unified, District A
Also, the biggest political news this week affects Clairemont in a small way. Congresswoman Susan Davis announced that she is not running for re-election. Although Clairemont is represented by our awesome Congressman Scott Peters, prior to 2012, part of our community was represented by Susan Davis.
Her leadership and contributions to legislation in support of our veterans, our military servicemembers, our environment, our public education, and a host of other issues. We want to thank Congresswoman Davis for her courage and leadership, and her past representation of our community in Congress.
Here is the statement from Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Susan Davis’s retirement:
“Congresswoman Susan Davis is a spectacular Member of Congress and a significant leader in our country. As a Senior Member of the Armed Services Committee and of the Education and Labor Committee, she is a Chairwoman who deeply understands that America’s strength is measured not only in military might, but also in the health, education and well-being of the American people. Her patriotic, persistent leadership on the Committee on House Administration to ensure clean, fair elections has helped protect the sacred right of all Americans to have their voices heard at the ballot box and in our democracy.
“Chairwoman Davis came to the Congress committed to fighting for America’s children. Her two decades in Congress have made a significant difference for countless families in San Diego, the state of California and the country. Her leadership will be soundly missed in the United States Congress. All her colleagues in the Congress look forward to continuing to benefit from her leadership for the next year and a half, and her legacy for years to come.
“We thank her husband Steven and her family for sharing Congresswoman Davis with the Congress and the country, and wish them the best in all their future endeavors.”
And we’ll close with the statement from Congressman Scott Peters:
“Congratulations to my friend and colleague Susan Davis on her retirement from the United States House of Representatives. Her service in Congress over nearly two decades has made San Diego and our country better. She has been a fierce advocate for our military families and service members and championed expanding education and opportunities for Americans. As the senior member of our delegation, Susan was a model of exemplary service for all of us.
“I’m sad to hear this news, but I’m glad to hear Susan will remain active and continue her service to San Diego here at home—where she has made so much of a difference already. I wish Susan, Steve, and their entire family the best as they embark on this next chapter.”
