Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR

Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our November 10 meeting, our guest speaker will be Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR (Consumer Advocates for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly- RCFE). Chris worked with Speaker Toni Atkins to pass a bill be sure these facilities meet high standards of service and care to the elderly and won the 2014 Free Speech and Open Government Award in California. We either have family members, friends or ourselves who will be needing these facilities.

Club meeting will start at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117), however feel free to stop by earlier for food, drink, and conversation with your fellow Clairemont Democrats.

Club Endorsement Information

Our Democratic Club has been asked by many candidates for endorsements for their 2016 races. As you know, last summer we endorsed two outstanding people who are not opposed by any Dem candidates: Scott Peters, our incumbent Congressman for the 52nd Congressional District, and Todd Gloria, candidate for the CA 78th Assembly District.

According to our bylaws, only members in good standing are allowed to vote. The definition of members in good standing is that they have their dues paid up to date.  Our dues are collected each January for the year.  Our voting on endorsements in contested races will occur at our January meeting. Our club must have a 70% majority to endorse a candidate in a Democratic contested race. We also have the option of voting not to endorse any candidate for a particular race.

ca demWhy are we doing this at the January 12, 2016, meeting? Because the California Democratic Party has decided that the Democratic Party’s district delegates will be voting on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, on the endorsements for the state and local races. We would like our delegates from our Clairemont Democratic Club to know the wishes of their fellow club members.

Our club does not hold a December meeting due to the busy lives of our members preparing for the holidays.

If you wish to renew your membership for our Jan. 12th meeting, please send the following amount in a check to the address below or bring it with you in cash or check to the meeting Nov. 10 or Jan 12:

Member:     $20/year       Full Time Student/ Unemployed/ Veteran: $10/year
Make check payable to and send to:
Clairemont Dem Club
PO Box 178846
San Diego, CA 92117

Club members who have been named delegates include: Howard Wayne, Susan Guinn, Jen Campbell, Rhoda Quate, Ryan Trabuco, Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, and Eden Yaege.

GoFundMe: Suzie and Mike

Suzie Ditmars with Gavin Newsom

Suzie Ditmars with Gavin Newsom

Some very unfortunate news this week.

Suzie Ditmars and Mike Thomason, longtime local Democratic activists and supporters, have been devastated by a condo fire that has left them with almost nothing.

San Diego Democrats for Equality have stepped up and started a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help them.

Please consider donating what you can. Anything helps. Never pleasant to see unfortunate things happen to incredible people like Suzie and Mike.

If you have any questions, please contact Hannah Stern at the San Diego County Democratic Party office at hannah@sddemocrats.org.

From the GoFundMe page:

Mike Thomason and Suzie Ditmar have been two of the most stalwart parts of Democrats for Equality, and the Democratic family in general. They’re always there, offering a helping hand and making sure we get the job done.
It’s time to offer a helping hand to get the job done for them now.
You may have heard that Suzie and Mike suffered the complete lost of their home to a fire over the weekend. They are busy trying to put their life back together so they have not been able to provide us with a list of their current needs but we know they are safe and alright.
While we don’t know their specific needs, we know that most of those needs (clothes, temporary housing, etc.) can be helped with money so, we’re asking you to help out with a donation to this appeal.
Please donate to help Mike and Suzie out right now and send out this appeal to other Democratic Party family members for whom they have worked so hard over the years.

Thanks.

San Diego Democrats for Equality

Congressman Scott Peters

Congressman Scott Peters

Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our August 11 meeting, we are excited to welcome Congressman Scott Peters back for an update on what’s going on in Washington, D.C.

Also, we will be considering early 2016 club endorsements for Scott Peters’ re-election, and for Clairemont native Todd Gloria for his State Assembly bid.

Remember: to vote on club endorsements, you must be a member in good standing! If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, or would like to join and become a member, then please remember to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks. We are working on setting up the ability to pay dues online!

Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible. The owners of Boomerang’s are great Democrats, and they deserve our business and support.

Clairemont Democratic Club Members Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Town Council

IMG_0012At this month’s Clairemont Town Council meeting, their Board members celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Town Council’s founding.

Several of our Clairemont Democratic Club members are also members of the Town Council, and attend their monthly meetings regularly to keep updated on issues in our community. Three of our club members also serve on the Town Council Board of Directors.

Our Democratic Congressman Scott Peters and our endorsed candidate for San Diego City Council (and club member) Carol Kim joined board members in the photo.

Congrats to the Clairemont Town Council for 60 years of community service! Here’s to another 60!

Upcoming Events: September 2014

San DIego City Council District 6 candidate, Carol Kim

San Diego City Council District 6 candidate, Carol Kim

Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

Wanted to keep you informed of these two upcoming events, hosted by Rhoda Quate:

First up, there’s a Clairemont fundraiser for Carol Kim on Tuesday, September 16 at 5:30pm. Minimum contribution is $100. We’d love to have you there in support of Carol even if you’re able to contribute a smaller amount.

With the minimum wage issue front-and-center on the minds of San Diegans, this election for Carol Kim is important!

For more information about the fundraiser for Carol Kim, please check out this flyer: Carol Kim Fundraiser Flyer 9-16-2014

scott-peters-finalFinally, there will be a house party for Congressman Scott Peters on Saturday, September 20 at 1:30pm. This is a perfect opportunity to turnout, invite your neighbors, and meet our Congressman.

Polls show Carol and Scott in close, margin-of-error elections against their Tea Party opponents, and they can’t win without a strong show of support from Clairemont.

If you cannot attend one of the events, please plan on attending the other. These are must-win races for our community!

For more information about the house party with Scott Peters, please check out this flyer: Scott Peters Meet & Greet Sunday 9-20

2 Months Until Election Day!

10687482_10152363342906943_2914455637278851899_oWe have 2 months until Election Day, and absentee ballots drop in only 31 days.

Folks, now is the time to step up and volunteer to help elect our Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.

The two most important races this year are focused in Clairemont — Carol Kim for City Council, and Scott Peters for Congress.

Polls are showing Carol Kim and Scott Peters in margin-of-error races against Tea Party-backed candidates, and we can’t afford let them down when they need our help and support. Most voters don’t start paying attention to candidates and campaigns until after Labor Day and — well, it’s after Labor Day.

If we going to win these races, we have to get involved now!
