Spotlight on Women’s Health Laws

Our Congressman, Scott Peters — who our club has proudly endorsed for re-election to Congress, by the way — has long been a champion for women’s health.

At the start of the current 114th Congress in fact, Rep. Scott Peters proudly stood against the Tea Party’s attempt to undermine women’s health choices. Scott Peters has done so time, and time again. We applaud him for it. One of the many reasons we love having Scott as our representative in Congress.

However, on a state-by-state basis over the last 5 years, Tea Party extremists have contributed to new laws being passed that have directly contributed to the closing of at least 70 women’s choice clinics throughout the country. On average, 14 per year. Closed. Done. Jobs lost, and healthcare opportunities for women abandoned.

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver seems to be on a roll lately. Voting laws were given the spotlight last week, which we posted about here. On his program last night, John threw the spotlight on the status of women’s health laws throughout the country.

Pretty scary stuff. The more Tea Party and anti-choice types get elected throughout the country, the more our progress on this issue recedes at the detriment to women.

Please, share this video. Perhaps, make a donation to Planned Parenthood. Then, let’s do something about it!

John Oliver: Voting

In California, we have it pretty lucky when it comes to voting.

We can change and update our voter registration online. We can easily apply for (and send in) an absentee ballot roughly a month before and through Election Day. Thanks to laws in California and a handful of other states, you practically have no excuse for not voting.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about our friends, families, and other eligible-to-vote Americans in states like Texas, Wisconsin, and South Carolina — actually, both Carolinas — so add North Carolina as well, among others.

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver takes a comical look — yet, eye-opening — at some of the more Draconian, anti-voting laws throughout the country.

Enjoy… and then do something about it!

NBC Drops Trump

As reported by news media outlets today, NBCUniversal has announced that they are no longer doing business with republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. From the press release:

At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.

Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC.

In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in “The Apprentice” on NBC.

“Celebrity Apprentice” is licensed from Mark Burnett’s United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue.

Last month at our Clairemont Democratic Club meeting, we had a healthy discussion on the topic of supporting businesses that exemplify democratic values. Kudos to NBCUniversal for standing up for those values we believe in.

On that note, here is a page from The Gaily Grind on which of those commercial brands celebrated the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision on marriage equality.

AB 1461: The California New Motor Voter Act

7 Million Voters. That’s more than the state populations of Washington, Massachusetts, and Arizona (individually, of course).

That is also the estimated number of new registered voters that The California New Motor Voter Act (AB 1461) will create if signed into law.

AB 1461 was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez and CA Secretary of State Alex Padilla. According to their press release, California ranks 38th out of the 50 U.S. states in terms of voter registration.

The bill is modeled after Oregon’s newly implemented New Motor Voter law that “allows for data already collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles to be provided by the Secretary of State to verify a resident’s eligibility to vote. After determining a resident to be eligible to vote, the Secretary of State then provides the information to county Registrars of Voters who maintain each county’s voter rolls. Those residents who are eligible to vote would be contacted by the Secretary of State with the option of declining registration or adopting a political party affiliation. The bill would continue to protect those covered by existing confidentiality policies, and voters would retain their right to cancel their voter registration at any time.”

For more information about AB 1461, check out Assemblywoman Gonzalez’s website, or contact Evan McLaughlin at (916) 319-2080 or (619) 850-2790.

Petition: Councilwoman Lorie Zapf Should Fire Staffer

Councilwoman Lorie Zapf is under fire for racially-charged comments made by her staffer, Shirley Owen.

Councilwoman Lorie Zapf is under fire for racially-charged comments made by her staffer, Shirley Owen.

The Holidays are almost over, but our friends at Point Loma Democratic Club have highlighted an online petition asking District 2 Councilwoman Lorie Zapf to fire her staffer, Shirley Owen, for racially-charged comments made earlier this month at our city’s inauguration ceremony for newly elected and re-elected members of the San Diego City Council.

From the petition: “On December 10, 2014, a group of protesters, including children, held a silent demonstration at the San Diego City Council Inauguration. The protest was against police brutality and to declare that black lives matter. The protest did not cause any disruption to the ceremony because it was held silently.  After the ceremony was complete 4 of 9 City Councils member commended the group of protestors on how respectful they were of the inauguration ceremony.”

As reported in a KPBS article, Zapf’s community staff member for Clairemont and Bay Park was quoted in reference to the protestors as saying, “f—— idiots with their hands up” and “I wanted to shoot them.”

If you’d like to join in signing, please check out the petition at
