Also, as a friendly reminder: Due to recent Bylaw changes, it’s important that we continue to grow and sign-up new members of the club. According to the endorsement process for the state party, the club gets 1 vote for every 20 members we have in each Assembly District (geographically, Clairemont is split between the 77th and the 78th districts). We need to increase our membership by the end of this month!
If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, then please remember to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks.
Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible. The owners of Boomerang’s are great Democrats, and they deserve our business and support.

For our February 10 meeting, we are honored to welcome our friend and former Interim Mayor and President of City Council, Todd Gloria.
Our club meeting starts at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Remember to order food and/or drink if at all possible as the owners of Boomerang’s will have to start charging the club for the use of the space if we don’t spend at least $150 while there. They are good Democrats and a Clairemont business and deserve our support.
Also, David Axelrod has written a memoir, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics, which hits book stores on February 10 (the date of our next meeting!). If you wish to pre-order, please do so.
Reminder: If you haven’t already renewed your club membership, then don’t forget to bring your $20 dues – cash or checks.
Also, be sure to put our next two gatherings on your calendars!

For our March 10 meeting, we will have Carol Kravetz from Al Gore’s climate change organization. Carol retired from television & movie production last year, having worked on Breaking Bad for several seasons, as well as cult classic This is Spinal Tap. She will be coming in from Los Angeles to speak to us and take questions.
Both meetings start at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117). Our last meeting was wonderful! We received handouts from Ryan Trabuco about how Clairemont had done in the recent November election, with a comparison of how it went in 2012. Good news – Clairemont went blue for Scott with many more votes for him in 2014. We also heard from new member Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, who was in charge of much of the Coastal GOTV field operation for Scott Peters’ campaign. Clairemont had 52% voter turnout – much more than the rest of the city, and lots more than the rest of California. Scott took over 60% of the votes in many of our precincts. Carl DeMaio only won 5 of our 42 precincts, capping out at only 51% of the votes in those 5. Clairemont really put Scott over the top!
Our speaker was Gil Cabrera, a Democratic activist and attorney, who has done a lot of public service for non-profits as well as on city commissions (and still does). He spoke about what we need to do to have Democrats win in all of our city elections. These new methods have been used in other states (Florida congressional campaign and Virginia Governor campaign) and have worked well. We hope to employ them here in 2016.
See you at our upcoming meetings. Come show your support for Todd Gloria in February, and the Al Gore Climate Change organization with Carol Kravetz in March! All the best for 2015!
Councilwoman Lorie Zapf is under fire for racially-charged comments made by her staffer, Shirley Owen.
The Holidays are almost over, but our friends at Point Loma Democratic Club have highlighted an online petition asking District 2 Councilwoman Lorie Zapf to fire her staffer, Shirley Owen, for racially-charged comments made earlier this month at our city’s inauguration ceremony for newly elected and re-elected members of the San Diego City Council.
From the petition: “On December 10, 2014, a group of protesters, including children, held a silent demonstration at the San Diego City Council Inauguration. The protest was against police brutality and to declare that black lives matter. The protest did not cause any disruption to the ceremony because it was held silently. After the ceremony was complete 4 of 9 City Councils member commended the group of protestors on how respectful they were of the inauguration ceremony.”
As reported in a KPBS article, Zapf’s community staff member for Clairemont and Bay Park was quoted in reference to the protestors as saying, “f—— idiots with their hands up” and “I wanted to shoot them.”
No meeting this month, but we wanted to wish you all a very, merry Holiday season with your friends and families!
Gil Cabrera, Attorney and San Diego Convention Center Board Member

ADEM Elections will be taking place in January as well. Every registered Democratic voter is eligible to participate.
The California Democratic Party is convening ADEMs on January 10 and 11, 2015, where 14 people (7 men / 7 women) from each Assembly District will be elected to represent their district for both the 2015 and 2016 State Conventions.
Since Claremont and Bay Park are split between both the 77th and 78th Assembly Districts, we need to be aware of the dates and times for our respective ADEM Elections.
The latest precinct-by-precinct vote tally in the hard-fought 52nd Congressional District campaign between Congressman Scott Peters and Tea Party’s Carl DeMaio, shows that our Clairemont community overwhelmingly supported Scott Peters’s re-election.
DeMaio was held to no more than 52% of the vote in his best-performing precinct, only winning five — two of those five by a small plurality. Meanwhile, Scott Peters won four Clairemont precincts with over 60% of the vote, and won everything else!
Ballots are out. Early voting has already started. Voters are casting their ballots now!
If you would like to vote early, and are not already a permanent absentee/vote-by-mail voter, you can take a short trip to the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa and cast your ballot! The Registrar’s office is located at 5600 Overland Ave., San Diego, CA 92123. They are open Monday thru Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.
The two most important elections that are happening in our Clairemont community are for our 52nd Congressional District, and our 6th City Council District.
