America's Finest Democrats. In the Heart of San Diego!

Club Meeting: September 13

Hello, Clairemont Democrats!

We are looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming Tuesday, September 13th meeting at Boomerang’s Gourmet Burgers, 4577 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, CA 92117.

There’s lots coming up at our next meeting:

  1. Opportunity Drawing – two items – the book Dark Money about the wealthy right wingers who fund the Republicans. AND a Hillary for President ball cap – Tickets will be $3.00 each.
  2. Campaign swag – we have a few items that were not pre-ordered that you can purchase if you wish and we have a few free Scott Peters lawn signs
  3. We will have an explanation of city Props K and L by an expert, Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, who is not only an MD, but also an attorney, and then if the Club members wish, we can take up a possible endorsement.
  4. PROGRAM: Mr. John Thickston and Mr. Ronan Smith present a Power Point in regard to Save our Neighborhoods – this is a big issue in the City Attorney race, and important to us who live next to the mini hotels that have sprung up in our neighborhoods that are illegal and that the mayor in regard to this, is not upholding the law.

We’re looking forward to a great meeting!

2016 Endorsement Update

IMG_2492

Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins speaks with club members

After tonight’s meeting, our club has endorsed the following candidates for the 2016 election cycle:

U.S. President: Hillary Clinton

State Senate, District 39: Toni Atkins

Secretary Clinton and Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins join our fellow endorsed candidates: Scott Peters and Todd Gloria

Although we were unable to come to a consensus to endorse in the race for San Diego City Attorney, we decided to rate both Gil Cabrera and Rafael Castellanos as “acceptable” for Clairemont Democrats this election. No matter which candidate prevails in that race, we know both of these candidates would be stellar choices.

Club Endorsement Information

Executive Board met in December and decided that the Club endorsement votes should be in regard to races for office that would include the voters of Clairemont. Thus, the following races are those in which we will be voting. As per our by-laws, there will be three possible ways to vote:

  1. We can vote to officially endorse a candidate — that requires 70% threshold,
  2. We can vote not to endorse at all, or
  3. We can vote that all or some of the candidates are “acceptable”

Below is the list of candidates and offices on which we will be considering endorsement:

  • City Attorney:  Gil Cabrera, Rafael Castellanos, Mara Elliott
  • State Senate:   Toni Atkins, Marty Block
  • U.S. Senate:   Kamala Harris,  Loretta Sanchez
  • U.S. President:  Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders
todd gloria

City Councilman Todd Gloria – Club Endorsed for 78th State Assembly District

As you may recall, our club as already issued early endorsements for Congressman Scott Peters, and Todd Gloria for 78th State Assembly District.

Club Officer Elections

We will also be voting on our Club officers for 2016. We have four elected officers who are running unopposed at this time although nominations from the floor can be made:

President – Jen Campbell, MD
Vice President – Rhoda Quate
Secretary – Kyle Ellis
Treasruer – Linda Carston

Other Members of the Executive Board are appointed and serve as Committee Chairs of Membership, Internet Technology, Hospitality, Political Action, & Photography. Other possible Committees may be formed from time to time as the need arises.

At our Executive Board Meeting in December, the Board noted that changes need to be made to our Club’s By-Laws to reflect changes in County Party By-Laws that were made at the Central Committee meeting in November 2015. Other updates are also needed.

Looking forward to receiving your membership dues in the mail and seeing you at the upcoming meeting.

Forward for Democratic Victories in 2016!

Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR

Hey, Clairemont Democrats!

For our November 10 meeting, our guest speaker will be Chris Murphy, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CARR (Consumer Advocates for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly- RCFE). Chris worked with Speaker Toni Atkins to pass a bill be sure these facilities meet high standards of service and care to the elderly and won the 2014 Free Speech and Open Government Award in California. We either have family members, friends or ourselves who will be needing these facilities.

Club meeting will start at 7:00pm at Boomerangs (4577 Clairemont Drive, San Diego, CA 92117), however feel free to stop by earlier for food, drink, and conversation with your fellow Clairemont Democrats.

Club Endorsement Information

Our Democratic Club has been asked by many candidates for endorsements for their 2016 races. As you know, last summer we endorsed two outstanding people who are not opposed by any Dem candidates: Scott Peters, our incumbent Congressman for the 52nd Congressional District, and Todd Gloria, candidate for the CA 78th Assembly District.

According to our bylaws, only members in good standing are allowed to vote. The definition of members in good standing is that they have their dues paid up to date.  Our dues are collected each January for the year.  Our voting on endorsements in contested races will occur at our January meeting. Our club must have a 70% majority to endorse a candidate in a Democratic contested race. We also have the option of voting not to endorse any candidate for a particular race.

ca demWhy are we doing this at the January 12, 2016, meeting? Because the California Democratic Party has decided that the Democratic Party’s district delegates will be voting on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, on the endorsements for the state and local races. We would like our delegates from our Clairemont Democratic Club to know the wishes of their fellow club members.

Our club does not hold a December meeting due to the busy lives of our members preparing for the holidays.

If you wish to renew your membership for our Jan. 12th meeting, please send the following amount in a check to the address below or bring it with you in cash or check to the meeting Nov. 10 or Jan 12:

Member:     $20/year       Full Time Student/ Unemployed/ Veteran: $10/year
Make check payable to and send to:
Clairemont Dem Club
PO Box 178846
San Diego, CA 92117

Club members who have been named delegates include: Howard Wayne, Susan Guinn, Jen Campbell, Rhoda Quate, Ryan Trabuco, Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, and Eden Yaege.
